Wedding Invitations: How to Create the Perfect Invite

Wedding Invitations are going to define your wedding to your guests. They do not know anything you have planned or any details involved in the big day. Wedding Invitations not only need to be formatted properly so details are clear but you want it to describe your day.

Whether your wedding is big or small, formal or casual, cheap or expensive, you will need to invite your guests in some kind of fashion.

Pick Your Wedding Invitations Theme

First thing first: the fun part of picking your format of your wedding invitation. Think about the colors of your wedding: flowers, bridesmaid dresses, suit colors, and the theme of your wedding. Again, your wedding invitation is the first thing guests will see so you want the first impression to be a good one! Look at the font and colors to create the perfect combination to describe the vibe of your wedding day. Ours was formal so we had white roses, black font, a curtsy type font to convey that vibe.

What do you include in your Wedding Invitations Bundle?

I say Wedding Invitation Bundle because a wedding invitation is not just 1 card. A wedding invitation includes as many cards as your heart desires. But, to keep it easy, I have broken out what you NEED to have in your wedding invitation bundle.

  1. Wedding Invitation – This is the formal wedding invite with general details of wedding.
    • Who is inviting the guest to the wedding? Are your parents inviting, both parents, his parents, are you inviting? Typically it is who is hosting (AKA paying) for the wedding.
    • Your name and future spouses name. You can be as formal as you want here. First name, middle name, and last name or just first and last names.
    • Time: Wedding Invitations can be very confusing on time because you want to be clear on what time guests should be there. The time listed on the wedding invitation is the time that the bride walks down the aisle. (We did not know this until we started attending weddings!)
    • Location: List the first location that guests will be arriving. Will this be a church, an outdoor area, beach, an event hall?
    • What to Expect: Lastly, I recommend adding what to expect. Will this be an all inclusive event where guests do not have to leave or will there be a reception to follow? Nothing too specific, that is where the Details card of the wedding invitation will come in handy.
  2. Details Card – This is obviously optional but is great to have so your wedding invitation is not crowded with details. For example, you can include cocktail or reception details, specific timing, valet/parking options, where you are registered, your wedding website, attire, or any details that you want your guests to know in preparation for the wedding day.
  3. RSVP Card and Return Envelope – This is a toss up nowadays because there are so many online options of wedding invitation RSVPs. But, if you are doing a traditional wedding, you will want to include this in the bundle. This is a very important piece of the wedding invitation because it will be sent back with the amount of people attending the wedding. Ensure there is a due date on the RSVP so guests know when they need to send it back.
  4. Envelops & Stamps – I know this sounds silly but it is an expense in wedding invitations that you don’t take in account. Stamps are not cheap so plan on spending a good amount because you will need them for your 1. Wedding Invitation and 2. RSVP Return Envelop.

Special Touches to your Wedding Invitations

Adding a ribbon around the wedding invitations is a nice touch and a good way to keep all the cards together when the guest opens it. We found a wedding ribbon that was our wedding color at Hobby Lobby.

A beautiful touch to the wedding invite is doing a wax seal to seal the wedding invitation envelope. We bought this wax seal kit and also purchased our last name initial to seal the wax. Prepare yourself if you have lots of invites, it will take a while but SO worth it in the end.

Pre Printed Guests Names and Addresses on the envelops was totally worth every penny! We paid a little extra for this customization but it was so easy and did not have to stress my handwriting! This feature printed our return address as well. RSVPs were pre printed with our address so guests did not have to write anything expect their name and amount of people attending.

Your guests will LOVE when they receive a beautiful wedding invitation. Ensure to double check spelling and grammar. After it is finally formatted and ready, have someone take a look to make sure details come across clear (future spouse, Maid of Honor, mom, mother in law, whoever you trust!).

Send out your wedding invitations 1-2 months before your wedding day to give you enough time to receive all RSVPs back for total guest count.
