Applying for a big girl job can be overwhelming and scary. A strong resume is going to be needed for applying to internships and jobs. Build a strong resume and you are setting yourself up for success.
This is YOUR chance to brag about yourself and give yourself credit for all the hard work you have done in the past. This piece of paper (or document online) is their first impression of you, let’s make it unforgettable!
(Nowadays most employers use a third party system that involves you filling in questions/information that are the same as what a resume would include, but having it all laid out and written already will make it that much easier when applying for jobs.)
How to Format a Strong Resume
Evaluate and chose your template/theme of your resume and build in quality information.
1. Quality over Quanity
Obviously the quality of the information is important, but the format is the first thing someone sees when they open your application.
At first glance, the recruiter does not want to see pages of information or long lines of text. One page, put together, easy to read resume will ensure that the recruiter will at least read the content.
2. Use a Template
Use a template to build your resume, Etsy has great templates. A small detail or design is okay but keep it minimal. You want your information to stand out on your resume.
information needed for a strong resume
1. Contact Information
Full Name
Include your Email and Phone Number.
Your resume has to have contact information. This is how they can contact you for interviews, questions, and any future connections. Include your first and last name, a personal email (your college/high school email will eventually delete) that has an appropriate name, and the phone number that you can best be reached.
2. What is your Objective?
State the reasoning you are looking for a job. Recent grad? Seeking opportunity? Career interest? Include your area of interest or why you want to be considered for this position.
Example of an Objective for your Resume: Eager college graduate interested in furthering experience and knowledge in the Blogging Industry to become a successful, confident, business professional.
3. State Your Skills
List any systems you are proficient in, personal attributes that can be beneficial to the role you are applying to, or any strong characteristics that relate to the job needs. Here is where you love yourself, what makes you great? What do you have to offer to the company?
Example of Skills for your Resume:
Experience in Microsoft, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook, Google Documents.
Strong planning/organizational skills, ability to multitask, works well with others and as an independent, flexible on schedule and tasks.
4. List Your Experience
FORMAT TIP: When listing experiences or education, place the most recent at the top of the list.
For each past role, include the company/organization, dates or time frame you worked, title you had in that role, and a brief description of what you contributed or did in that position.
As a recent grad, you may not have a lot of experience and that is okay!!! Instead of work experience, list our projects, volunteer work, or other forms of areas that you were a leader or performed duties/tasks.
Be specific in your description of your role, cut out fluff or extra words. People reading resumes read lots and they do not want a long description of your past experience. Emphaze collaborative work, leadership, and tactical work that you may have done throughout your past experience.
5. List your Education
Include the degree or certification you received, school you attended, and the date/future date of graduation.
If you are an upcoming graduate student, add your future graduation date. If they see a future date, they will assume you are in school. Will this deter them? No!! They will most likely just ask more questions on the status and your schedule or will it affect your start date.
And that is it!! You have built a strong resume and are ready to start applying! This is the easy part, the best is yet to come!
Good luck and reach out if you have additional questions on building out the best resume!
Welcome to being a Corporate Girly! 🙂
