5 Tips on How to Increase Productivity when Working from Home

Hey Corporate Girly, let’s talk productivity when you work from home.

We all know that getting to work from home is a blessing and a curse. If you struggle to sometimes be productive, this is the perfect post to crack the work from home productivity code.

Ever since the pandemic, going to the office has a whole new meaning. Schedules still change frequently and policies are ever-changing.

I worked from home my entire first month because I was living in a different state. Once I arrived, I was working a hybrid schedule. Then, there are weeks where I am home all week due to holidays or travel.

Every company, department, or team could have a different work schedule. You might be always in office, completely remote, or a hybrid work schedule. Or a crazy 1 day office here, 1 day work from home there.

Whether you are working from home all the time or only sometimes, these are the perfect ways to increase productivity in your schedule.

The *Chef’s Kiss* is working a hybrid schedule, I have noticed most corporate jobs are following that trend. Having the in office, in person meetings, is great for my social battery. On the other days, it is great to work from home and recharge the social battery.

5 Productivity Tips to Follow When You Work from Home

1. Morning Routine

Do not change your morning routine just because you work from home.

Like I said, I am hybrid so I work in office and I work from home. In the past on my work from home days, I would sleep later than my in office days or I would skip washing my face till later in the day. This is UNPRODUCTIVE!

Your body runs on a schedule. If you wake up late, skip the workout, don’t journal your anxiety away (game changer in my routine!), or don’t make your bed……you will feel sluggish and not be motivated to get any work done.

Wake up, brush teeth, wash face, workout, take a walk, make your bed. Having a scheduled morning routine is SO important to have a productive day.

How you start the day is how your day will go!

Not to be bias but I have unlocked the perfect morning routine. With a combination of self care and productivity, I have crafted the morning routine that gets me out of bed.

All to be said, your morning routine is key to the productivity in your work day.

2. No Pajamas

Change out of your lounge/pajama clothes and put on a semi causal outfit.

Pajamas are associated with sleep or lounge, which is not what you should be doing during your work day.

I often had the idea in my head that I only need to look presentable if I am on camera during my work meetings or if because I am not going anywhere there is no point in changing.

My go to work from home outfit:

Leggings

Ribbed Shirt

Cardigan

Slippers (I had to put these, they are UGG dupes and are so comfy for being around the house)

This outfit checks all the boxes for being cute, professional for being on camera, and also very comfortable.

Productivity is all about how you feel. If you look like crap, you will feel like crap, therefore not being productive in your work day.

Take off the pajamas!

3. At Home Work Space

Your work from home space needs to be separate from your living space.

You may not have an actual office or even a separate living space, but it is all about putting yourself in that head space. Having an area/space where you know that is “work only”.

We have a 750 square foot apartment, we absolutely do not have an office.

We do have a desk. We took that desk and have built it into a work from home space. Build your space to have an office vibe: desk, chair, monitor, pens, pen holder, mouse, keyboard.

Productivity is a mental game.

Associating a space to work is a mind game.

Your bed is not an office. Your couch is not an office. Those are places associated with relaxation and sleep, not productivity.

Only use the “office space” for actual work. Online shopping should not be done at the office space on the weekend, this disassociated the desk with work.

4. Time Block

I love a booked up calendar. Let me rephrase that, I love a time blocked calendar!

Time block or set specific times during the day to work on tasks.

Whether you use your online work calendar to time block or use a physical planner to write out specific task time, time blocking allows you to only work on that set task.

Time Block Tips:

  • set/schedule time blocking in the morning
  • do 1 hour time blocks for tasks
  • be specific on tasks to be completed in that time block
  • give yourself breaks, do not block back to back all day

By setting specific time blocks for tasks, you will not be distracted by your to do list or other things that need to get done because you allocated your time.

Time is money. Do not waste your time blocking on trying to answer a million emails or bouncing from one project to another.

To max time blocking productivity, be realistic with yourself.

5. Prioritize your To Do List

Like I said: Time is Money!

Every morning, I am writing out my to do list. I am a Type A person so I write every detail. Whether you are a pen to paper girl or online note girl, either work to establish the task list.

Corporate America is all emails. Before building the my to do list, I go through my inbox to establish the ground of the day.

Writing a complete to do list will allow you to prioritize the tasks that need to be completed that day.

I could write an entire blog post in itself on how to prioritize work tasks but in a nutshell: requests from upper level management, deadline projects/tasks already set should take priority.

Every company is different so I cannot say that is particularly accurate for everyone so don’t come at me BUT most likely if there is a pre set deadline or a superior is asking, it most likely is an important task and needs to be done that day or week.

A consistent cadence of prioritizing tasks and time blocking sets your productivity level for the day.

& that is all you need to increase productivity when working from home.

Corporate Life is a grind and building a positive, productive environment is the first step to doing a good job in your role.

That might sound crazy but it is true, you only perform how you feel.
